Stuff to Know for First Timers
(Much of this information is from one of my teachers' "Student Guidelines", Steve Ilg, creator of High Performance Yoga, of Wholistic Fitness and author of Total Body Transformation (Hyperion))
Embrace, Enjoy, Respect:
Many areas in life are favorable to a competitive mindset. Yoga is not one of them. While here, embrace inner restrictions and challenges. Do not compete against them. Enjoy what you bring to the yoga mat each day, be it fatigue, excitement, strength, or weakness. Don't discriminate against being fully human. Enjoy it all, use it all. Learn from it all. Respect yourself enough to be true and willing. Practicing politeness within and without generates a collective positive energy for everyone.
Hit The Off Button Before Entering The Space:
This means turning off the ego, the cell phone, pagers, beeping things, the mental chatter, the doubt, the hesitation. Focus on fun, acceptance, and spontaneity.
Arrive Early:
If you are late, enter the class quietly. Being on time strengthens your Practice. Come with a clean body and if possible refrain from using heavy scents (on the day of your class). Wear comfortable clothing. Yoga is done in bare feet so you might want to make sure your feet are clean. You may want to bring a small towel.
Arrive Empty:
Yoga is science of self healing. Pran flows better when the stomach is empty and when your internal heat is not cooled by drinking during class. Always try to practice on an empty stomach. Leave one hour after a light meal, three hours after a heavy meal and stop drinking 30 minutes prior to class.
Listen:
"The first gift of love is to listen," Rumi said. Learn to listen to the language of your breath, your body, and your Teacher. It will assist you if you attend classes regularly. Classes build your experience and understanding of yoga. You benefit by consistent and regular attendance.
Please advise the teacher of any new injuries or change in medical condition.
Make this your time and your practice!
Relax...rejuvinate...breathe...smile...enjoy!
Yo! n' nubes' end of year message! (just in case you missed it the first time)!
Seasons Greetings all and in what ever you do this holiday may it be filled with beautiful breath and strength of spirit.
We've (nubes & i) been doin' this yoga stuff for a while now (bringing yoga2you), even though the community based East End Zen has been a reality for just over 2 months and yogawithyo.com a virtual & real world entity for a month, i just have to say that the amount of yoga love and powerful chi that circulates in all of our classes and online among you active minded yogis is incredible. We want to thank you all... The gym ratz, the desk jockeys, the awakened athletes, the devoted East End "Zenners" who have loyally stuck around through our sometimes bumpy time of growth. Thanx for your patience through the "funky" classes, as i found my flow as a teacher; the scheduling confusion, as we co-ordinate our classes with our many hosts; the set-up chaos, as we prepare for each dance... Every time you come to practice your yoga at one of our noble mobile oasis' I feel inspired and motivated just from your eager faces and "amped" up chi. Your presence encourages me to delve deeper into my own practice and expand my yoga knowledge base to learn more to share with y'all (just as you selflessly share with us). With each class i feel blessed and honoured that you have the faith in the vision of what we all are creating... a community... a family of spiritually and physically fit urban warriors.
For the East Enders we are truly a simple urban den oozing with sweet strength, pure sweat and absolute serenity. A g'roots group without the "fluff", no additives, no preservatives. In the short time from our first class to today our complete practice together has evolved. The groove is much smoother and stronger. For those of you who only came by for our early sessions i invite you to check us out again for the first time (our treat)... the positive vibe, the deep flow, the explosive chi becomes more electric each week. As we grow and our den fills with more like driven yogis there will be no containing the magical glow we will exude.
P.S. Thanx, To those of you who have sent your friends our way... Keep spreading the word, that's the only way we can keep the fire burning!!!
P.P.S. Keeping in lines with the commitment and what you are all asking for we have confirmed our new schedule. Make space in your day timers cause the exciting and expanded Winter 2005 Schedule is out. We are digging in East End Zenners, so keep comin' out and playin' in'!!!
level vibes & jah luv,
yo! n' nubes
the" free yoga" rant, of old!
An Aside: So we've been gettin' a whackload of inquiries about our "free yoga offer". Yes, we absolutely are sharing free yoga, that's all kosher!!! Truth be told, we luv hearing from enthusiastic yogis who "get" our vibe. If we didn't want questions we wouldn't have put it soooo out there. What concerns me are the calls and it just feels like all the person wants is the free yoga... straight up, this yoga ain't for you... you gotta come because you want to explore your breath... you gotta come cause you want to experience your life... you gotta come because you want to bathe in the energy... you gotta come cause you want to feel the vibe... the magic doesn't flow so smoothly if you come just cause its free, free yoga you have in your own living room!!!
Yes, please come enjoy some yoga with us... but seriously you're gonna have to check that "it's" free yoga mentality (it can hang out with your ego and all of your expectations) at the door. For real, this may not be the yoga for you, but heck it could be just what the body needs to FREE up the soul. Free up your mind, engage your spirit in the yoga and buckle in as you prepare to explore, experience and enjoy the journey, blissful breath by beautiful breath.
That is all! We're out!
Eavesdropping as i dodge the rain dropping: So, i'm walking home from the post office this afternoon and i pass the little park up by my place. There is a little girl, about 8, on the swing, her dad stands near by watching. The little girl swings and swings and swings. When she's got a good height on her swings she says to her dad, " daddy do you know that when you close your eyes and you're swinging really high it feels like you're on a roller coaster?". The daddy says, "what you feel dizzy and light headed?". There is a pause, no response... then the little girl lets out this loud, long, bliss filled squeeeeaaaaaallll, followed by a full on belly laugh. She keeps on swinging. ~Oh to be 8 and swinging as high as you can. Did you know that when you close your eyes it feels like you are on a roller coaster? :)
